Self-Compassion: Where to Start. The Beginning of 365 Days of Kindness.
I have been fortunate enough to have had good mentors, friends, and family, and always am thinking about how to give back. One of the primary ways I help people is through self-compassion psychology. In an effort to give back, I am going to try to post something short every day. 365 days of kindness.
The idea behind self-compassion psychology is simply that there are lots of stresses in the world: current, past, and future. To live a happier, healthier life, we find a way to acknowledge difficulty and bring kindness to our experience.
It's particularly important for those who work their minds and bodies hard, as it has a rejuvenating effect. It is, in effect, warrior medicine. Whether you are a professional athlete, an office worker, someone who works with your hands, or a parent, much is asked of the body and the mind. It makes sense to acknowledge the body's and the brain's hard work, and do things to take good care of them as thanks for their efforts.
Today, on the east coast, it is cold, cloudy, and rainy, which might affect your energy or mood. Notice how it feels or looks outside. Think about how it affects other people, and wish them well being. Sneak yourself into these wishes of well being and (if you can), plan something to brighten your day.
Plan on watching a favorite movie that will elevate your mood. Call a friend who makes you feel good to talk to. Go to the gym or yoga studio or take a walk. Meditate. Drink some warm tea or soup. Most importantly, be kind to yourself.
