Becoming The World’s Most Interesting Person Through Self-Compassion
Self-Compassion And Social Currency
Self-Compassion and Social Currency are all you need to become the most interesting person in the world. Self-Compassion keeps you humble and aware enough to venture out, experience more, and become a narrator of life that compels, inspires, and connects others to your journey and their own; ends that could not be achieved by dwelling in suffering or vanity. You are aware of your experience, soften into it, articulate it, and pursue your fears and joys with the goal of reaching complete self-acceptance.
Social Currency (adapted from Jonathan Berger’s Book, Contagious) simply means that you have something remarkable to offer that others value. An exchange takes place when you share these remarkable things. If you exchange a few things, people begin to see you as remarkable. If you exchange enough of them, they start to see you as the most interesting person in the world. A collection of interesting facts is a good example of social currency.
10 Facts That Will Get You Noticed
Consider the following 10 riveting truths* :
1. You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television. Unless, you are watching it on the treadmill.
2. Coca-Cola would be green without added coloring. Hulk’s drink of choice?
3. You cannot snore, and dream at the same time. Thank goodness. I cannot sleep at all while you snore, so why should you get to dream too.
4. Men are 6 times more likely to be struck by lightning than women. This is because when we find a good woman, it feels as if we have been struck by lightning. Women, on the other hand, are still trying to figure out whether we are smart, funny, kind to animals, and appreciative of our mothers.
5. Bob Marley’s last words to his son before he died were, “Money can’t buy life.” It also cannot buy love or happiness.
6. Al Capone’s business card said he was a used furniture dealer. What did you want it to say? Serious killer. Massively uncompassionate mobster.
7. Eating celery will make you skinnier. It literally takes more calories to eat it than exist in the celery, itself. I am sorry. I was busy adding several bags of celery to my grocery list.
8. Gorilla’s burp when they are happy. I love being a gorilla!
9. Cherophobia is the fear of fun. I wonder what the word is for fear of chairs.
10. The elephant is the only mammal that can’t jump. This reminds me of a joke. Why did the mouse make the elephant cry? Because he was too scared to jump. It’s funny because it’s true!
Self-Compassion, Love, and Truly Becoming The Most Interesting Person Alive
Fun facts are nice. They give others a chance to feel smart, viable, and interesting. However, if we truly want to become the most interesting person in the world, we have to take on the unedited, fully immersed exploration of our heart, and be willing to share all of the cuts, bruises, hugs, and celebrations on this journey. I do not mean the idealized, mushy stuff. I mean the honest description of our coming to terms with what nature has given to us, both brag-worthy and shutter-worthy.
Don’t believe me? Ask how many people have seen The Notebook. If you have not seen it, you may believe that is an indulgent playing up of some false romance story, but if you have seen it, then you would know that it is a man’s daily journey to remind his wife about their hard fought love story, despite a memory condition that prevents her from even recognizing him on most days. That is a true love story, one that does its very best to speak to the depths of all of our hearts without giving up because pain is part of this tale.
In your life right now, you can make this very choice. If you decide to pursue loving yourself and others with a full reconciling with, understanding of, and incorporating in all of your parts, you will without a doubt become the most interesting person in the world.
Of course, this will also involve telling your story to inspire others to live life more fully and with greater self-compassion, and perhaps tell their own stories. You will probably feel self-conscious about sharing some things, these same things will probably also empower you, as you surrender your need to judge yourself or fear the judgment of others.
How do I know? Because I have this same conversation with you everyday. I try to be as honest, and self-compassionate as I can, while I take on my fears and pursue my joys hoping to inspire you to do the same, and wishing you a life of pure acceptance. I may not be the most interesting person alive yet, but fear not, I do not plan to leave you all any time soon.
