Meet Dr. Jeffrey Steinbrink

I am a therapist from the Boston, MA area, who specializes in self-compassion and mindfulness practices for adults and teens.

The challenges we face in life can leave us emotionally bruised, beaten, and even defeated, but I believe that within all of our vulnerabilities lies a hidden strength. If we can identify these vulnerabilities and process them with undivided attention and compassion, we can better understand how they impact us.

In my therapy practice, I not only seek to help you find your hidden strengths, but also help you develop positive core values, so that you can understand yourself and what you want in life. I have found that this approach can give you the confidence needed to make decisions that uniquely forge your own path of well-being.

My Background

My path to becoming a therapist began with my brilliant, humble psychologist mother, who helped me navigate a childhood challenged by a tough environment, anti-Semitism, and racism, as well as difficulties due to my overly empathic nature. Her influence has stayed with me and motivated me to provide the kind of support and empowerment for others that she gave to me.

I also had a profound experience that changed my career path forever. I worked with a boy with a difficult personal life who went through ten different foster homes in ten years. Through our work together, I successfully brought him back from selective mutism, but due to his circumstances, I needed further training to be able to help him live his best life. I determined what kind of degree and professional position I would need to advocate for him - thus I pursued a Psychology Doctorate.

Furthermore, seeking therapy for my own needs has proven inspiring and impactful. I had an experience with an amazing psychologist who I can thank today for teaching me how to love openly and honestly without endangering my well-being or sense of ease. These experiences led me to practice as the psychologist I am today.

My Approach

I specialize in providing therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, and teenage mental health issues. I find it heartbreaking that people feel damaged or somehow missing a critical part of themselves because they experience fear, sadness, grief, or developmentally-related difficulties. I find it sadder still that these challenges can become a sort of prison that prevents them from pursuing their hearts' desire, believing that they deserve to be happy, or feeling worthy of being well-received by others.

For me, these obstacles call upon us to be courageous, and working through them inevitably leads to a life well-lived. Those who struggle with mental health issues are required to be more courageous than your average bear. That’s why I’m passionate about passing on what I’ve learned through my own experiences and my training, giving people the tools to feel serene, confident, and empowered.

My Modalities

While I am trained in several theoretical backgrounds, I place a priority on ensuring that you learn to process anything that comes up for you with self-compassion and mindfulness. I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, attachment-focused therapy, and narrative therapy, among other techniques.

Utilizing traditional therapeutic methods as well as a focus on self-compassion, I have created a system of my own that lets uncomfortable emotions pass through you in a way that engenders compassion, kindness, and strength rather than criticism and future worry.

If former mentors or clients were to describe me, I think they would say that I believe very deeply in the potential of my clients to live a life that brings them meaning, ease, and joy. I am willing to fight for that in collaboration with them one session at a time, leaving no rock unturned or questions unanswered.
